    • Sam Kok is the abbreviated title commonly used in Indonesia to refer to the Sanguo yanyi 三国演义, which is one of the most remarkable Chinese historical novels. This article aims to examine the impact of the Sam Kok on the Dutch Indies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries according to two axes: first, in terms of mentalities and daily life of the peranakan Chinese, and second, in the press and particularly in the Sin Po where one of two earliest Malay full translations had been published between 1910-1912. Consequently, the links between the historical novel, the press and the emergence of the concept of Chinese nation are discussed by analysing the coexistence between modernity and history in this weekly paper.
