Résumé : En 1776, Heinrich Zimmermann s'embarquait pour le troisième voyage d'exploration dans le Pacifique conduit par le légendaire capitaine James Cook. Le matelot allemand en rapporta le récit fasciné de sa découverte, quatre années durant, des peuples du grand océan. Il y raconte ses périples, de la Nouvelle-Zélande aux rives de l'Alaska en passant par les Tonga, Tahiti et surtout Hawaï où, à la suite d'une énigmatique cérémonie, Cook fut mis à mort sous ses yeux par les insulaires. Depuis plus de deux siècles, les raisons de ce meurtre comme son interprétation ont suscité quantité d'hypothèses. Dans son essai clôturant cet ouvrage, l'historienne Isabelle Merle s'efforce d'ajuster la focale autour de l'événement, afin de pénétrer la texture de ces fameux « premiers contacts » qui jalonnent l'histoire complexe de l'Océanie.

Résumé : Par trois fois, Cook prit la mer pour un voyage qui allait durer plusieurs années. Il ne fut pas reçu à bras ouverts par les populations des mers du Sud. Il parvint cependant à rassembler quantité d'objets, d'échantillons scientifiques, à établir relevés et dessins qui attendirent quelque deux cents ans avant d'être évalués et publiés. Résumé : Captain James Cook is inextricably linked to the South Pacific in the popular imagination, his voyages satisfying our fascination with so-called Polynesian exoticism. But his crowning navigational and scientific achievements took place in the polar regions. "Captain Cook rediscovered" is the first modern study to frame Captain James Cook's career from a North American vantage. Recognizing that Cook sailed more miles in the high latitudes of all of the world's oceans than in the tropical zone, this book gives due attention to his voyages in seas and lands usually neglected, such as South Georgia in the far southern Atlantic and the Alaskan subcontinent, whose dimensions Cook first delineated. David L.
