What is American Literature?

Résumé

The book ranges widely from William Bradford's history Of Plymouth Plantation (1630–51) to the work of Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, Langston Hughes, and Annie Proulx. Central to Stavans's meditation on the book's titular question is the view that writing and life, individual and especially collective, interpenetrate each other—hence the key importance of a book he returns to at various points, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
