The natural laws of plot : how things happen in realist novels

Résumé

The theories of plot are considered in the works of Laurence Sterne, Daniel Defoe, Jane Austen, Ann Radcliffe, Walter Scott, and other novelists of the 18th and early-19th century. In the epilogue Lee fast forwards to Zadie Smith’s White Teeth (2000) and examines plot in a contemporary novel. This interest in representing and exploring how things happen sets the novel apart from other literary genres, and makes the history of science integral to the understanding of the history and theory of the novel, and of narrative.
