- Les articles réunis dans ce volume sont issus du colloque annuel de la SFEVE intitulé « The Transformative Power of the Arts in Victorian and Edwardian Culture and Society » qui s’est tenu en mars 2018 à l’Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3, organisé par EMMA (Études Montpelliéraines du Monde Anglophone). Il s’agit dans ce numéro de montrer l’influence de la société sur les arts ainsi que le pouvoir transformatif que les arts ont pu exercer sur la culture et la société victorienne et édouardienne en général. Ils mettent en lumière les nouvelles technologies, les procédés industriels et scientifiques qui attiraient les auteurs et artistes victoriens et édouardiens et qui étaient représentés dans leurs œuvres. Ce volume entend également se pencher sur les échanges entre les sciences, les technologies et les arts et voir s’ils ont eu un impact sur la circulation entre les arts eux-mêmes ou si les changements dans la société et la culture se sont reflétés d’une certaine manière dans le dialogue entre les arts, surtout à une époque où de nouvelles formes artistiques émergeaient et que de nouveaux processus d’hybridation et de fertilisation mutuelle étaient à l’œuvre. En d’autres termes, l’analyse des pouvoirs transformatifs des arts à l’époque victorienne et édouardienne revient aussi à mettre au jour les dynamiques sociales et intermédiales des arts et à renouveler notre conception de la période. Ce numéro rassemble également 3 articles issus de l’atelier de la SFEVE lors du Congrès de la SAES qui s’est tenu en juin 2018 à l’Université Paris Nanterre (Paris X) sur le thème « Utopie(s) et Révolution(s) ». This volume gathers papers given at the Société Française d’Études Victoriennes et Edouardiennes annual conference ‘The Transformative Power of the Arts in Victorian and Edwardian Culture and Society’, which was held at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 on 1–3 March 2018, convened by EMMA (Études Montpelliéraines du Monde Anglophone). The 10 articles show the influence of society over the arts as well as the transformative power which the arts exerted over Victorian and Edwardian culture and society at large. They showcase the new technologies as well as the industrial and scientific processes which attracted Victorian and Edwardian writers and artists and which were represented in many of their works. The volume also means to see if the circulation between science, technology and the arts had an impact on the circulation between the arts themselves, or if the changes in the society and culture were reflected somehow in the dialogue between the arts, especially at a time when new art forms were emerging and processes of hybridization and cross-fertilization were indeed at work. In other words, analysing the transformative power of the arts in Victorian and Edwardian times means to highlight the social as well as the intermedial dynamics of the arts and to give a somewhat renewed vision of the period. The volume also gathers three articles from the SFEVE workshop at the SAES conference in Université Paris Nanterre (Paris X) held in June 2018, focusing on ‘Utopia(s) and Revolution(s)’.
