Résumé : Considéré comme le père de la nouvelle bande dessinée américaine, Art Spiegelman réalisa d'abord un "roman graphique" de 300 pages "Maus" qui connut un immense succès. Il y raconte l'histoire de ses parents, Juifs polonais rescapés du camp d' Auschwitz, en construisant son récit à partir d'interviews de son père. Dans "Maus", il révèle les possibilités documentaires et narratives de la bande dessinée. Puis, pendant dix-ans, il réalisera des dessins pour le "New Yorker". Témoin des évènements tragiques du "11 septembre" à New-York, traumatisé, il réagit en se remettant à composer une nouvelle bande dessinée : "A l'ombre des tours mortes".Le film montre des extraits de ces deux oeuvres tandis que Art Spiegelman explique ses motivations personnelles. Dans son atelier, devant son ordinateur et sa table de dessin, il présente ses techniques de travail où il combine le graphisme traditionnel et les nouvelles technologies. Enfin, il conclut en évoquant le nouveau statut de la bande dessinée américaine qui amènerait le lecteur potentiel à la littérature.

Résumé : "Misère au Borinage" fut l'un des premiers documentaires militants : il décrit la misère ouvrière et le chômage après la grève des mineurs de 1932 en Belgique et la répression qui suivit. "Terre d'Espagne", film pro-républicain, peint au quotidien la défense de Madrid pendant la guerre civile espagnole. "Les 400 millions" évoquent la résistance chinoise pendant la guerre sino-japonaise. Commandité par le Ministère de l'agriculture américain, "L'Electrification et la terre" reste un document informatif et poétique sur la campagne américaine des années quarante.
