Résumé : This is the first monograph to give an overview of the entire career to date of artist Ding Yi (b. 1962), whose work, unlike most other well-known Chinese painters, is wholly abstract. Large in scale, and extraordinary in detail, Ding Yi's paintings invite a myriad of questions, not least how an intuitive artist works with recurrent patterns and symbols. Résumé : A maverick figure in New York’s downtown scene, Humphries has revitalized the language of abstract painting over a career that has covered four decades and multiple transformations in style. Published on the occasion of Jacqueline Humphries’ exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts, this major catalog surveys the artist’s work from the past seven years, including dozens of new paintings and her largest multipanel installations to date. The exhibition and its accompanying catalog highlight the importance of digital communications and online culture in Humphries’s ever-changing practice. Incorporating the QWERTY keyboard as a means of generating abstract forms, the artist’s recent paintings integrate emoticons, emojis, CAPTCHAs and ASCII text as layers of mark-making in dense and vivid works. Other featured works explore the visual language of corporate logos; black light paintings presented in darkened spaces; a group of protest paintings that subtly channel political dissent; and thickly painted renderings of white noise, in which digital content receives viscerally material application. Across each body of work, Humphries reaffirms her ongoing commitment to abstract painting, while bringing a seemingly traditional form into dialogue with the issues and interfaces that shape contemporary life.

Résumé : La Tate Britain accueille la première exposition rétrospective et monographique de Frank Bowling de mai à août 2019. Ce catalogue présente toute la carrière du peintre originaire de Guyane et membre de la Royal Academy, soit plus de 60 années de création. À ses premiers travaux figuratifs des années 1960 succède la tension entre géométrie et formes organiques, avec des oeuvres se rapprochant de l'expressionnisme abstrait, où la texture et l'épaisseur jouent un rôle déterminant. L'exposition présente également ses matières plus rares, tels que les pigments métalliques, la craie fluorescente et les gels acryliques.Born in British Guiana in 1936, Frank Bowling arrived in Britain in his late teens, going on to study paiting at the the Royal College of Art in the same cohort as David Hockney and Derek Boshier. Since he started painting in the late 1950s, Bowling has pursued a relentless exploration of the properties and possibilities of paint, experimenting with stitching, staining, pouring and dripping. Often ambitious in scale, and usually described in terms of its colourful and luminous quality, and the energetic application or accrual of paint, Bowling's work combines figuration, abstract elements, popular and autobiographical references, and demonstrates his interest in social and political imagery. Accompanying what will be the first solo exhibition internationally to address Bowling's entire oeuvre, this publication will explore an extraordinary career spanning over 60 years.
