Sir John Hicks wrote two papers on money - " Suggestion for Simplifying the Theory of Money" (1935) and "Mr Keynes and the Classics" (1937) - which became very well known. They are reprinted here. Most of the other essays included are the fruit of a re-thinking of the older papers in the light of more recent work; they lead up to a view of the "Keynesian revolution" which is rather different from the more usually accepted one. The book concludes with a set of studies of the contributions to monetary theory of three eminent authors - Henry Thornton of "Paper Credit", the Keynes of the "Treatise", and the Hayek of "Prices and Production".
