Nicaragua : 1978-july 1979

Résumé

Susan Meiselas's photographs of the revolution in Nicaragua form an extraordinary narrative, starting with a powerful and chilling evocation of the Somoza regime, following the course of the popular resistance that led to an insurrection, and ending with the triumph of the revolution. Yet "Nicaragua" is more than a remarkable account of a revolution in the making. It shows what rebellion in the Third World can involve, the nature of the "old regimes," as well as the courage that is required to overthrow even the pettiest of modern dictatorships. Susan Meiselas went back to Nicaragua to interview the participants in the revolution, many of whom she had gotten to know while taking her original photographs. Excerpts from these interviews, edited with the help of French journalist Claire Rosenberg, accompany the more than seventy images in the book. - Note de l'agence Magnum Photos
