Livre

A new history of Kentucky

Résumé

The first edition of this work has served as the standard text on Kentucky’s history for a generation. In this update Friend (North Carolina State and author of Along the Maysville Road, CH, Jan'06, 43-2980) authored the chronologically arranged chapters, which begin with the arrival of the Paleo-Americans and extend to the conclusion of the Civil War. Klotter (Georgetown College and State Historian of Kentucky) then builds on his text from the previous edition to bring the commonwealth’s story to the 21st century. The well-written, fast-paced narrative uses the theme of constant change throughout as it contextualizes individuals like Daniel Boone, Henry Clay, and Muhammad Ali within Kentucky’s economic, political, and social history. Particularly notable is the inclusion of the contributions made to the commonwealth by African Americans, American Indians, and women. Scholars will welcome the selected bibliography, which is a comprehensive historiographical essay. The text is supplemented by numerous maps, charts, and black-and-white illustrations. This work is highly recommended for libraries supporting programs in American history. - Note de l'éditeur
