- Writing around 1950 the Mexican poet, Octavio Paz, attributed the defeat of the Aztecs to what he called “imperial fatigue.” This might have seemed a poet’s phrase, too fanciful for a serious historian, until a startlingly apt contemporary instance was provided by the sudden collapse of the Soviet empire in 1989.
