Résumé : Renée Levi is one of Switzerland’s most prominent contemporary artists working with painting and installation. Since the late 1990s she has examined the limits of painting, expanding her explorations in three-dimensional installations and interventions. This leads to surprising dialogues between architecture and her artwork in these three-dimensional works. Form and color take on immense dimensions, without losing any of their fragility. Besides essays on Levi’s oeuvre, this publication offers a comprehensive survey of her multi-layered work from the past decade, while also documenting the new works in Baden and Geneva.Renée Levi (* 1960 in Istanbul, lives in Basel) studied architecture and fine art in Basel and Zurich. She has been a professor of painting at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel since 2001. Her works have been exhibited around the globe for more than twenty years. In 2018 the artist was awarded the Société des Arts de Genève prize for art.

Résumé : Peter Saul has consistently challenged art, history, and politics with his radical, unrefined style. Positioned outside of the canon of contemporary and Pop Art, Saul s exuberantly grotesque works feature an ironic and caustic humor that simultaneously breaks down and celebrates his subjects. Influenced by both French academic painting and MAD magazine, Saul s steadfast embrace of narrative and figuration in painting have left him at odds with every major movement in art as he has transformed over sixty years into a profound, albeit unconventional, history painter. This comprehensive catalogue, published on the occasion of the artist s exhibition at Les Abattoirs, Toulouse (travelling to Namur, Belgium in 2020), covers the artist s oeuvre since the late 1950s and presents many previously unseen paintings, works on paper, and archive materials.

Résumé : The exhibition Inhale – Hold – Exhale at the Kunstmuseum Thun is the first institutional show of the Danish artist Jeppe Hein in Switzerland, which was developed in close cooperation with the artist. The exhibition takes up the subject of breath and Hein’s exploration of the subject in different ways. Hein’s works induce the awareness of body and mind, refer to the active perception of all the senses and are an invitation to wonder, to decelerate and also to smile. The exhibition will be characterised by different participatory elements. Hein turns viewers into actors and surprises us with the unexpected.

Résumé : The internationally renowned art collective Slavs and Tatars is devoted to the area known as Eurasia: east of the former Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of China. Considering themselves as “archeologists of the everyday”, the collective focuses on the interplay of religion, power, language and identities. In books, exhibitions, and performances, they investigate mentalities, myths, traditions, and transitions, through a combination of scholarly research, polemics, and low-brow humor.Wripped Scripped continues the collective’s investigation of alphabets as an equally political and affective platform. While the roll-out of new alphabets has often accompanied the rise and fall of empires, the artists attempt to liberate not so much peoples and nations but rather the sounds and letters that make up langauge. Chapters include a look at the phoneme [kh] as a sacred perspective in the Hebrew, Arabic and Cyrillic alphabets; Germany’s relationship with Orientalism through the tetragraph [dsch]; and a study of nasal phonemes in constructing Polish and Turkish identity.

Résumé : Robin Rhode’s trademark is the wall. His works are influenced by urban music culture, film, popular sports, youth culture, and traditional South African storytelling. They are created in the public space, on walls. It’s not about the statement that he leaves behind on the street, though—it’s about the process. Hence, in his visual short stories he captures the links between drawing, performance, and sculpture, step by step. No body without a line, no line without a body. With drawing as his starting point, he develops increasingly complex photographic works, digital animations, performances, sculptures, and works on paper, which comprise a content-related balancing act between South African history, culture, mindset, signs, and codes and the abstract language of European-American art history. This richly illustrated catalogue accompanies Rhode’s first solo show in twelve years in Germany. Besides pictures of the art itself, the book also contains an interview, an introductory essay, and poems by South African authors, to which his work often refers. Exhibition: Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany (28.09.2019 - 09.02.2020).

Résumé : Under the guiding principle of lumbung, the Indonesian collective ruangrupa is less concerned with individual works than with forms of collaborative working. As a reference work, companion, and innovative art guide, the Handbook offers orientation for these comprehensive processes; it is aimed at visitors to the Kassel exhibition as well as those interested in collective practice. All the protagonists at documenta fifteen and their work are presented by international authors who are familiar with the respective artistic practice and cultural context. Entitled “lumbung,” the book introduces the mindset and cultural background of documenta fifteen illustrating the artistic work processes with numerous drawings. A chapter on Kassel presents and explains all the locations of the show, including the artists and collectives represented here.

Résumé : With his iconic interpretations of American society, Ed Ruscha (* 1937) stands out as one of the most prominent figures of 20th century American art. His art is closely associated with cool and elegant representations of stylized gas stations, Hollywood logos and archetypal landscapes. Since the beginning of the 1960s no one else has so radically interpreted the development of modern visual culture in and around L.A. where the artist lives and works. Deriving his motifs from the perspective of the road, the windshield and the movie screen, his works give a distinctive sense of the huge, flat city space located in the desert. Featuring over 50 works from the UBS Art Collection, the exhibition catalogue covers not only the time from c. 1960 onward, but also the technically and graphically innovative approaches that Ruscha has made use of over the years, including studies for his most iconic paintings and artist books. Taking its title from one of Ruscha's "word-pictures" VERY, the publication includes an essay written by George Condo and the curator of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art's interview with the artist.

Against the Tide évoque la direction contraire dans laquelle s'engagent certaines choses. Il met l'accent sur les usages et le paysage du monde rural dominé par la forêt et l'agriculture, aidant à améliorer le quotidien de ses habitants par l'architecture.

Résumé : This catalogue, the second volume in a proposed series of five, chronicles Sean Scully’s paintings of the 1980s. Beginning with major breakthrough works early in the decade, it profiles the development of Scully’s mature style as well as his growing success in America and internationally.Scully, a native of Ireland, was educated in England and moved to the United States in 1975. By the early 1980s, he was established in New York and making works that would influence his work years to come. In works both small (Solomon) and large (Heart of Darkness), Scully developed a powerful style of richly painted stripes and shapes with a masterly control of color and strongly built canvases. In an era of low regard for abstract painting, Scully invigorated and reinvented the form to include rich evocations of places, literature and other art forms, and emotions. By the end of the decade, he was universally regarded as one of the most important artists of the second half of the twentieth century.
