Résumé : Featuring the indelible work of the eleven photographers who worked for the Farm Security Administration—perhaps the finest photographic team assembled in the twentieth century—A Vision Shared : a Classic Portrait of America and Its People 1935–1943 was published in 1976 to great acclaim, and was named one of the hundred most important books of the decade by the Association of American Publishers. John Collier, Jack Delano, Walker Evans, Theo Jung, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn, John Vachon and Marion Post Wolcott were invited by Hank O’Neal to choose the best of their own work, and provide commentary. For the fortieth anniversary edition of this remarkable volume, all of the photographs, text and historical material that made up the original edition have been carefully reproduced, followed by a new afterword by O’Neal detailing the events that followed the book’s initial release. - Note de l'éditeur

Résumé : In 1965, British artist John Jones left the UK with his young family to live in the USA. There they settled in Greenwich Village, New York, and spent several months on a road trip west, seeking out artists and interviewing as many as they could. All revealed something unique about their work and practice. Many spoke of the times they were living in – 1960s America, a political and cultural crucible. Some (Claes Oldenburg and Yoko Ono, for instance) became Jones’s personal friends. Published here for the first time, this book presents a fascinating selection of Jones’s conversations with those artists, as chosen by his daughter, Nicolette. This is the story of art presented not through the filter of art critics, but from the mouths of the practitioners. Featuring an array of wellknown voices, including Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Louise Bourgeois, Lee Krasner, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, The American Art Tapes offers an intimate portrait of the American art scene in the mid 1960s – a pivotal moment in twentieth-century art – and the thinking that gave rise to one of the most fertile creative periods in our recent history.

Résumé : "At the end of World War II, many Americans longed for a return to a more normal way of life after decades of depression and war. In fact, between 1945 and 1963 the idea of "normality" circulated as a keyword in almost every aspect of American culture. In "Perfectly Average", Anna Creadick investigates how and why this concept reemerged as a potent homogenizing category in postwar America. Working with scientific studies, material culture, literary texts, film, fashion, and the mass media, she charts the pursuit of the "normal" through thematic chapters on the body, character, class, sexuality, and community."

Résumé : History of art & Design styles : from 1900 -. A radical re-evaluation of American modernism. The importance of American artists in the history of modern art is well-known and well-documented, from Jackson Pollock to Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol. However, the work of such artists did not spontaneously appear after World War II, nor was it simply transplanted from Europe. There is a longer, subtler history of the development of modernism in relation to American artists, as well as teachers, patrons and collectors, which can be traced through the first half of the twentieth century

Résumé : American City: Detroit Architecture, 1845–2005 is intended to showcase a Detroit that might surprise many readers and bring long-overdue attention to the city’s heritage of fine design. In 90 stunning full-color photographs, the book documents the innovative features of fifty of Detroit’s most impressive buildings. An introductory essay offers an overview of the city’s architectural history and outlines the social forces and the personalities that helped shape the city’s built environment. The heart of American City, however, is the photography, which brings Detroit’s architecture to life in gorgeous detail. Accompanying text identifies each building and provides basic information such as date, location, and architect, pointing out features that make the building of particular interest and importance.
