Développant une scène multiforme empreinte de violence et de sarcasme, ces artistes ont permis à la scène californienne d'acquérir une renommée internationale. ©Electre 2019 Épicentre de la contre-culture américaine, la côte Ouest des États-Unis s'est affirmée, dès les années 1960, comme un lieu propice à l'expérimentation riche et fertile de nombreux médiums. Tournant le dos à une mythologie de carton-pâte hollywoodienne, une scène multiforme, aux accents parfois violents, souvent sarcastiques et parodiques s'est développée dans le sillage de prestigieux instituts d'art, où l'on étudiait le cinéma expérimental et la performance. Toutes les composantes de l'art des années 1980 et 1990 sont représentées par les cinq artistes réunis dans ce volume : body art autodestructeur (Chris Burden), assemblage mêlant objets et peintures dans un joyeux désordre bariolé (Richard Jackson), performances irrévérencieuses et sculptures gonflables de corps humains grotesques et hyper sexualisés signifiant le côté sombre du rêve américain (Paul McCarthy), installations vidéo sonores nourries de psychanalyse (Mike Kelley), peintures volontairement plates, jouant avec les images et les mots dans une approche conceptuelle (Edward Ruscha). Cette multiplicité a contribué à la renommée internationale de la scène californienne et à l'imposer au même titre que sa rivale new-yorkaise.

Résumé : In 1965, British artist John Jones left the UK with his young family to live in the USA. There they settled in Greenwich Village, New York, and spent several months on a road trip west, seeking out artists and interviewing as many as they could. All revealed something unique about their work and practice. Many spoke of the times they were living in – 1960s America, a political and cultural crucible.
