Résumé : Patti Smith et Robert Mapplethorpe ont vingt ans quand ils se rencontrent, par hasard, dans le New York de la fin des années 60. Just kids, roman d'initiation, retrace l'envolée de ces enfants terribles, de 1967 à 1975, de leur rencontre jusqu'au moment où Patti Smith enregistre son premier album, Horses, qui lance sa carrière de chanteuse. Depuis sa première apparition au cinéma dans Faustine et le bel été, de Nina Companeez en 1972, en passant par La dentellière de Claude Goretta en 1977 et Violette Nozière, de Claude Chabrol qui lui vaut son premier prix d'interprétation à Cannes en 1978, elle n'a cessé de marquer le cinéma et le théâtre d'une empreinte singulière et exigeante, révélant au fil de ses très nombreux rôles son goût pour les personnages complexes.
