Beth Sholom Synagogue : Frank Lloyd Wright and Modern Religious Architecture

Résumé

Situated in one of Philadelphia's numerous leafy suburbs, Beth Sholom Synagogue may not rank among Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous buildings, but it is one of great interest on several counts. Wright scholar Siry (Wesleyan) offers a wealth of insights into the building's adventurous structural configuration, the remarkable interplay between architecture and nature experienced in the main worship space, and the close working relationship that developed between the architect and his client, Rabbi Mortimer Cohen. But Siry goes far beyond what one expects from a monograph on a single building. His voluminous tome, breathtaking in its scope, examines Wright's religious work through his long career and indeed tells readers much about religious architecture in the US during the 20th century. Anyone with a serious interest in Wright, religious architecture, or modern architecture more broadly will find this book a superb source. Summing Up: Highly recommended. -- R. Longstreth, George Washington University
