Résumé : “Dans le monde, trois milliards d’hommes souffrent déjà de malnutrition. Un milliard sont affamés dont 130 millions de plus durant les seules années 2007 et 2008. Nous avons enquêté en Europe, interrogé de nombreux spécialistes de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, parcouru l’Afrique et ses disettes chroniques, mais aussi, les exploitations de céréales et soja de l’Argentine et les usines d’éthanol aux Etats-Unis, puis traversé une Chine en voie d’urbanisation accélérée. Pour parvenir à nourrir sa population, celle-ci investit désormais à l’extérieur de ses frontières, en Afrique, et, justement, en Argentine. Avec l’exemple du maïs et du soja, deux cultures majoritairement livrées aux OGM, que les agrocarburants, mais aussi l’élevage intensif, disputent à l’alimentation humaine, ils nous permettent de comprendre pourquoi la demande agricole grimpe alors que l’offre baisse. En dehors même des phénomènes boursiers, c’est un problème de raréfaction de la production alimentaire qui s’installe de façon structurelle.
